Legal seminar a learning experience for lawyers, students

SHILLONG: The interactive session during the two-day legal seminar has been of immense help to advocates and law students. A statement issued by the Shillong High Court Bar Association here on Monday said that the just concluded national seminar organized jointly by the Bar Association of India and the Shillong High Court Bar Association on the theme ‘Current challenges before the Legal profession and the Judiciary” was a success.
“Interaction by local lawyers and law students of the State with Ram Jethmalani, senior advocate of the Supreme Court, other advocates of the apex court and other High Courts would help the advocates and young students of the State to develop self confidence,” the statement added.
The seminar was attended by around 500 delegates including law students.
The advocates practicing in different courts of the State together with advocates from 14 other states of India participated in the two- day seminar held from May 20 at U Soso Tham Auditorium.
The seminar was divided into four sessions namely “the role of Judiciary in bringing up young bar”, “Recent arbitration amendment and commercial courts act, “Role of Bar Association of India in bringing up bar in Northeast and “Customary laws and practices in Meghalaya. Two sessions of the seminar were chaired by sitting Judges of Gauhati High Court and one session was chaired by a retired Judge of the Gauhati High Court. Eminent speakers from Supreme Court and other High Courts besides the Meghalaya High Court addressed the gathering to highlight the issues involved in different sessions.
The inaugural and valedictory function was attended by the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, Dinesh Maheshwari, Governor V. Shanmuganathan, Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh and Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.
