NONGSTOIN: The KSU Nongstoin circle has lodged a complaint with the West Khasi Hills deputy commissioner and demanded stern action against the staff of Nongstoin Civil Hospital for allegedly distributing medicine which had crossed the expiry date.
Distribution of expired medicines by Nongstoin Civil Hospital came to the fore after a three year girl was given a medicine – Polymol Syrup – which had expired three months back.
The minor girl came with her mother from Urkali to the Civil Hospital on Saturday morning after she was found having fever. The doctor at the civil hospital prescribed her the medicine which she collected from the     hospital itself. When she reached home, the mother realized that the medicine had expired three months back.
“The Polymol Syrup was manufactured in March 2014 and the expiry date was mentioned as February 2016,” said KSU Nongstoin circle president Davis Goldfield while producing the bottle of medicine and the hospital prescription as proof of his claim.
The KSU demanded that the DM&HO office should check all the existing drugs and submit a report to the DC Office.
The KSU also reminded that in February, the Union had received a complaint about a medicine Furazolidone which contained worms. The medicine is routinely used to cure Diarrhoea in children.
The KSU urged the deputy commissioner to take stern action against the persons involved and asked the Health department to be more alert in the near future.
