Party pleads PM to improve connectivity in State

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Friday submitted a petition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding constitution of a boundary commission to settle the vexed boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam in the spirit of the “give and take” arrangement.
In the memorandum, the UDP lamented that the border haat at Bholaganj, though cleared by both India and Bangladesh in 2014, is yet to materialize due to non availability of funds. The party urged the Prime Minister to initiate construction work for the border haat at the earliest.
While asking the Prime Minister to accelerate the development of the airports at Shillong and Baljek, the UDP requested the Prime Minister to identify new sites for airports to improve connectivity even as it urged him to accord priority to the State government proposals to include some State roads under the national highway programme.
The UDP also asked the Prime Minister to request the defence authorities to relax the policy adopted by the Ministry of Defence and give land under their occupation for expansion of roads and construction of flyovers in the city.
The UDP mentioned that NEIGRIHMS lacks manpower and medical specialists and urged the Prime Minister to increase the number of medical seats in the hospital besides setting up a cancer institute on the NEIGRIHMS premises.
The party also spoke on the need for introducing anti defection law in the autonomous district councils and shed light on the resolution adopted by the State Legislative Assembly that has been forwarded to the Union government for consideration.
The party also raised the issue of the Village Administration Bills pending before the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The party stated that the NGT ban has cost the State a lot in terms of revenue and livelihood and now the State requires alternatives to tide over the crisis and supplement its losses.
The party also requested the Prime Minister to set up an LPG bottling plant in Meghalaya.
