Crucial meeting to be held today

SHILLONG: The dissident legislators have projected the MPCC president DD Lapang as their new leader and a meeting will be held at his residence on Saturday evening to be attended by the Congress legislators to chalk out future course of action.
The meeting is likely to seek the consent of Lapang to be the leader of the dissident group so that the decisions arrived at the meeting can be taken up with the AICC leaders.
After his arrival from Delhi on Thursday night, several Congress legislators met Lapang on Friday at different intervals at his official residence here.
Lapang later told reporters that though he is the president of the party, he only acted as a messenger to convey the grievances of the party legislators to the AICC.
“I am a disciplined soldier of the party and it is upto to the AICC leaders to decide who will be the leader”, Lapang said.
To a question on whether the Chief Minister should step down gracefully since he lost the numbers, the former Chief Minister said that it varies from individual.
“In the past when I felt that I lost majority, I had stepped down to pave way for a new leader”, Lapang said.    According to Lapang, prior to his meeting with the AICC leaders, he had already conveyed to Chief Minister in Delhi on May 23 about the demand of the Congress legislators for a change of leadership.
Now, the dissident legislators are expected to meet the AICC leaders in Delhi to get their nod for the change of leadership.
