World No Tobacco Day
The NSS Unit of ICFAI University observed World No Tobacco Day on May 31 by organising a campus counseling programme with the students on the ill effects of tobacco. 40 NSS volunteers led by Bawan Ryntathiang, Programme Officer, took out a silent campaign to Police Bazaar against the use of tobacco.
Accreditation
In the recently held third cycle of assessment and accreditation process by NAAC, Shillong College has been adjudged ‘A’ Grade with CGPA 3.06 on a four point scale.
Felicitation
The Seng Kur, Mei-Sin will felicitate Dr. Tynjuh M. Hynniewta on the occasion of him having been recognized and awarded as one of top 100 Biodiversity Scientists in the world for 2015, at the Khasi National Durbar Hall, Mawkhar on June 3 at 11 AM.
Pilgrimage
NEHU Hynniewtrep Hosteller’s Union participated in a pilgrimage to Lumsohpetbneng on May 28 for good fortune (Kiew eh-rngiew) to mark the organization’s 15 years of service. The pilgrimage was led by Rosestar Sing Khasain, Joint Secretary, NEHU-HHU, and others.
Platinum Jubilee
Gorkha Association Shillong celebrated its Platinum Jubilee by organizing a football tournament and a Meghalaya Open Table Tennis tournament. On May 29 a play performed by Bhanu and Pala Group from Kalimpong was staged.
Festival
For the first time in Shillong, the Rabha traditional festival of Baikhu was organized under the aegis of the Karanol Cultural and Welfare Society, a society of Shillong Rabha community.
Office bearers
Central Govt. Employees’ Residential Welfare Association, A.G. Colony has elected new office bearers with Rajyapal Deyokota as president, Robin Ruchal as vice-president and Partho Jyoti Dey as general secretary, besides others.
Inauguration
D.D. Lapang, Advisor to the State Government, and Rajya Sabha member Wansuk Syiem inaugurated the auditorium hall of Lyngngam Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Mawthengkut on Tuesday. The project was undertaken under the MP Local Area Development Scheme, 2013-2014, at a cost of Rs.20 lakhs.
IGNOU exam
The IGNOU term-end exams will begin on June 1. Around 5,50,000 students will be taking the examinations in the country with around 5600 students appearing their exams in Meghalaya.
Relief
The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills, has sanctioned an amount of Rs.41,100 for payment of gratuitous relief to affected beneficiaries under Laskein Block.
Unclaimed body
One Kalu Chettri aged around 30 years was admitted in Shillong civil hospital on May 17 and passed away on May 27. Relatives are requested to collect the body from the hospital morgue within three days after which the body will be sent for disposal.
