Highlights ‘plight’ of Garo candidates
TURA: The Tengsak-led faction of the GSU has questioned the order issued by the Education Department on May 25 regarding the temporary appointment of lecturers in Government colleges of the State.
In its complaint to Education Minister R C Laloo the union made special mention of the appointment of one Jojrang G D Shira as a Lecturer in the College of Teacher Education, Tura. Shira formerly taught Physics at the Tura Government College.
“Shira was appointed on contract basis as the Physics Lecturer in the Tura Government College and does not even have a B. Ed degree. As per our knowledge, an M. Ed degree is a mandatory requisite to be appointed in such a college (College of Teacher Education). His (Shira) appointment to the post is either an arrogant abuse of power or simply a case of gross manipulation,” it said hinting at corruption in the Education department.
The union also questioned the appointment of an English Lecturer in the Tura Government College. According to the union one Damaya-iaka Grace Suiam, who was earlier an Economics lecturer has been appointed as a lecturer in the English Department, which it termed as a ‘joke’.
“We do not understand why an Economics lecturer has been appointed in the English department when there are two vacant posts for Economics lecturers. There is a need for more Economics lecturers in the college as the pressure on the current few is affecting the quality of education,” the union added.
The union also raised the issue of appointment of people from Khasi and Jaintia community as lecturers in Government colleges of Garo Hills when there are very few Garo lecturers appointed outside of Garo Hills.
“Garo Hills has always welcomed quality lecturers but the problem is, most of such lecturers obtain a transfer to Kiang Nangbah Government College thus making the Government colleges of Garo Hills a doorway to appointments.”
Stating that there are vacancies in colleges all across the state the union urged the department to open the doors of opportunity to some of its Garo brethrens in Government colleges in other parts of the state.
