SHILLONG: The State government is contemplating to restart the enrollment for the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) by issuing a unique biometric-enabled number, called ‘Aadhaar’.
Indicating this, an official source on Saturday informed that a meeting will be held on Monday to discuss all issues pertaining to Aadhaar exercise.
Last month, the enrollment exercise for Aadhaar was halted following protests from several quarters.
The State Nodal Officer, NPR PW Ingty will attend the Monday’s meeting.
“We will have to take a decision probably of getting a new agency since we cannot delay the exercise any further,” the official source said.
It is learnt that around 20 percent of the residents in the East Khasi Hills district have been enrolled for the Aadhar card and now people are coming forward in large numbers to get themselves enrolled.
It may be mentioned here that the senior BJP leader Nalin Kohli had recently said that Assam and Meghalaya were lagging behind in Aadhaar enrolment and the attacked the Chief Ministers of both the states accusing them of denying delivery of subsidy meant for the poorest of the poor directly in their accounts.
