11,475 bottles worth nearly Rs 8 lakh seized this year
SHILLONG: The BSF troops deployed at Dalu, West Garo Hills after a special patrolling, apprehended two Indian liquor smugglers namely Rajesh R. Marak, (22), and Lachit M. Marak, (20), both residents of l-Dimapara, under Baghmara, South Garo Hills while they were trying to ex-filtrate from India to Bangladesh along with 49 bottles of liquor.
The consignment meant for smuggling was to be handed over to their associates in Bangladesh but alert BSF troops nabbed both of them before they could cross the international boundary.
Drinking alcohol is prohibited in Bangladesh and considering the situation, the smugglers are making profits by selling liquor bottles at exorbitant rates.
Small-time smugglers have been able to continue the illegal activity by hiding liquor bottles in cartons and placing them under culverts near the border. The Indian smugglers then send messages or calls via mobile phones to their Bangladeshi associates to collect the bottles at a convenient time.
This year, till date, 11,475 bottles of liquor valued at Rs 7,94,807 lakh have been seized and twelve smugglers including three Bangladeshi have been arrested.
BSF said that its troops are keeping a regular vigil to foil any such attempt and have succeeded to make arrest of nefarious Indian liquor smugglers with liquor.
