NE security heads to discuss border, insurgency issues

Two day security meet begins in Shillong from today

SHILLONG: The DGPs and IGPs of Northeastern states and the heads of central police organizations based in the North East will hold a two day security meet from Thursday in Shillong organized by the Intelligence Bureau, Delhi.
The meeting will discuss the need to have better coordination among security personnel in the North East to thwart any attempt by North East based militants at regrouping.
There were media reports of Khasi militant outfit HNLC and Garo Hills based GNLA having nexus with ULFA and other outfits.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Meghalaya Police spokesperson G.H.P. Raju said the 23rd conference to be held at the Police Headquarters, here would discuss and deliberate on agenda points relating to issues of internal security and regional coordination among the security agencies and police forces of Northeastern states besides the issues related to International Border management.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma would deliver the inaugural address while Home Minister Roshan Warjri would also attend the inaugural function.
The last such conference was held in Gangtok in 2013.
The conference of North East DGPs/IGPs is being held on a regular basis since 1982. The first such conference was held on May 19, 1982 in Shillong.
In fact, Shillong is holding the present conference for the eighth time in the last 24 years.
The police officers scheduled to attend the conference include Special DG, IB, New Delhi, DGP, Meghalaya, DG, NCB, DGPs of Assam, Sikkim, Nagaland, and Additional DGPs of Tripura, Manipur and West Bengal.
Officers from Assam Rifles, BSF, ITBP and SSB will also take part in the conference.
Navin Verma, Secretary, DoNER and officers from other Union ministries will also be part of the meeting.
