Assam high-handedness

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party’s (UDP), Ri Bhoi unit has sought the State Government’s intervention into the alleged highhandedness on the part of Assam which has erected three gates in Madan Umwang, Sabuda and Umsyrliang in Block  II areas thereby collecting  “huge amounts as tax from vehicles transporting agricultural produce.”
Submitting a memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister RC Laloo in this regard on Thursday, the UDP said that it was high time the state government intervened and resolved the matter once and for all.
“Indigenous inhabitants living in Block II area are facing numerous problems arising from the conflicts between the two states. Harassment from the local administration, police and militants has turned them landless in their own land,” UDP’s Ri Bhoi unit president Donbok Khymdeit said.
The party further said that the three gates erected by Assam and run by  people from a particular community collected huge amounts as tax from vehicles transporting agricultural produces thus making people suffer immensely from this arbitrary exorbitant fee levied by these gates.
“How will they survive if they are subjected to such harassment? It is high time for the government to stand up and sort out the issue,” the UDP said.
