SHILLONG: The State Police seem to have decided to try everything possible to check the rising drug menace in Meghalaya. Clearly, with an aim to be better equipped to seize the contraband item, the police have invested big on dogs which are currently undergoing training outside the State.
“The police department has purchased some of the most expensive dogs to curb the illicit drug supply in the State,” SSP, CID, Claudia A. Lyngwa informed during an awareness programme against drug abuse & illicit trafficking at the Synod College here. The programme was organised in collaboration with World Vision India.
“There are over 30,000 drug abusers in the State,” Lyngwa said adding that Shillong being an education hub stands at risk of becoming a place much sought after by drug sellers.
“It is the youth from outside the state who bring the banned substance and sell it to their counterparts n Meghalaya,” she claimed addressing a gathering of students among others.
Lyngwa urged the youth to be on  alert against drug menace and report any incident that may come to their notice.
Prior to the commencement of the programme, a rally was taken by students, teachers and the general public to highlight the dangers of drug abuse.
