SHILLONG: A study centre to prepare students for professional courses like Company Secretaries (CS) will be set up in Shillong College, Principal of the college, K.D. Ramsiej, said on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference here, Ramsiej said, “The course will be open to all who have successfully completed their class XII. It will be of great benefit to the students especially those from the poorer sections. Our study centre will act as facilitator and will provide coaching to the needy students.”
The principal and governing body of the Shillong College has taken the initiative to launch the CS course in collaboration with the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) which is a statutory body under the Act of Parliament, The Company Secretaries Act, 1980 to regulate and develop the profession of CS.
“The enrollment of students to the various correspondence programme offered by the ICSI will immediately start,” Ramsiej said.
“The admission and facilities of the CS course is open to all students of Meghalaya,” the principal said.
Ramsiej observed that most students are not aware of such courses which are actually in high demand all over the country and the college is keen to make an extensive campaign regarding the career as a CS.
Stating that there is a huge shortage of company secretaries in the country, Shillong College vice-principal K.D. Roy, he said, “The actual demand for company secretary is around 1 lakh however there are only 10,000 company secretaries in the country at present.”
Speaking on the employability factor, Ramsiej said, “The CS qualification has been recognized by various Universities for admission to PhD course in Commerce/Management/law.”
Shillong College had, last year, entered into an agreement with ICSI for setting up of the study centre.
