SHILLONG: Opposition UDP has slammed the State Government for leasing out a plot land to the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) for 30 years at Kylleng Pynden Umiong in South West Khasi Hills district following which the corporation had floated tender for setting up of an open pit mine, processing plant etc.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday on the sidelines of a party meeting, the UDP president Donkupar Roy informed that the land was leased out to the UCIL in 2010.
His statement came after protests from several quarters against the recent tender notice for Expression of Interest (EOI) issued by the UCIL without the consent of the state government and KHADC.
While asking the State Government to come clear on the issue of uranium mining in the state, Roy said that the Government should not have taken a haste decision to lease out the land to the UCIL.
“It is necessary for the state alth hazard on people and environment when the UCIL carries out uranium mining,” Roy said.
“The Central government and the UCIL cannot carry out uranium mining in the state without the approval of the State Government,” he said.
Earlier, the party had demanded a white paper on uranium mining from the State Government.
