Two killed in Guwahati landslides

Guwahati: Two persons including a teen-aged girl were killed in two separate incidents of landslides that occurred in Guwahati city on Thursday prompting the administration to sound alert in vulnerable foothills residential areas in the city that is dotted with numerous inhabited hillocks.
Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu informed the media here that a priest of a temple was killed in landslide at South Sarania hill areas in the city while a teen-aged girl got killed at Juripar in Noonmati area when her housed was buried under a landslip on Thursday morning. The administration announced ex-gratia of Rs five lakh each to the next of kin of both the deceased.
The administration has removed at least four families from the vulnerable landslide prone locality at Juripar in Noonmati even as alert has been sounded asking the people living in foothills area and on slopes of hills to remain vigilant and move to safer places.
Two more teen-agers were killed due to landslide at 11th mile area in Guwahati city along the boundary with Meghalaya on July 7 last.
