SHILLONG: In an attempt to draw attention to the “burning issue of proposed uranium mining in Meghalaya” the Thma-U-Rangli-Juki (TUR) on Saturday made a demonstration at the River Festival, Nadi 2016, which concluded at the Aurobindo Institute in the city.
Accompanied by a group of youths, the TUR demonstration saw posters which read, “Uranium mining shall poison Bangladesh rivers”, “Share Our Culture, Share Our Poison”,  and “Say no to uranium”.
Besides distributing pamphlets on the ill effects of uranium mining, the group also spoke to Bangladeshi participants and apprised them of the dangers of radioactive waste travelling to their rivers if uranium mining is   allowed in Meghalaya.
It may be mentioned that a number of pressure groups in the state are also opposing the proposed uranium mining with controversy surfacing over a fresh tender floated by the Uranium Corporation of India Limited for construction of an open pit mine, processing plant etc., for mining of uranium at Mawthabah in South West Khasi Hills.
