SHILLONG: Saturday’s development in Arunachal Pradesh — Congress’ decision to change the leadership to ensure unity in the party — is a cryptic message for Meghalaya Congress, at least a section of dissidents in the state feel so.
A dissident Congress legislator on Saturday said that the stand of AICC is a signal to Meghalaya.
‘The AICC has learnt the lesson from the dissidents and now they have to listen to the voice of dissents in other states too,” the legislator said.
In Arunachal what the dissidents wanted was the removal of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, but since the AICC was adamant in the past, the dissident leader Kalikho Pul secured the support of other disgruntled legislators to form an alternate government.
Political observers feel that though Supreme Court re-instated Tuki as the Chief Minister, the AICC understood that Pul would again come back to power if the leadership issue is not resolved. The main demand of the dissidents was the removal of Tuki.
Hence, the AICC resorted to the drama of selecting Pema Khandu, the son of late Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu as the new leader.
