SHILLONG: Sydney Corrie (93) a resident of Thoppumpady, retired architect with the Military Engineering Services, passed away on July 18 at Kochi.
Corrie had worked as an architect in Meghalaya in the past besides pioneering voluntary organizations in city. The funeral procession will leave the residence Lily Gardens, PT Jacob Road Thoppumpady at 3pm on July 20 and the funeral services will be held at St Sebastian Church Thoppumpady, Kochi.
Born on October 14, 1922, Corrie had an illustrious career, having served in Burma during the Second World War.
Besides Shillong, he had also served in Jalandhar, Burma, Pune, Chennai, and Bangalore.
He was associated with the planning of the Burma Command with the British Army in Burma for which he was awarded the Burma Star.
From 1971 to 1980 he worked in Shillong on various architectural projects in the North East.
He founded a firm – Architectural and Design Consultants, in 1981 and designed various projects such as hospitals, colleges, religious institutions, office complexes and residential buildings including the residence of the chief minister of Meghalaya.
He provided leadership for many social initiatives and served as president of a number of organizations such as the Indo German Friendship Association, Voluntary Health Association of India (Shillong), and Lion’s Club of Shillong, among others.
