SHILLONG: The KSU South West Khasi Hills District Unit has slammed BJP State Unit president Shibun Lyngdoh for his view on uranium mining and the need for a proper mining policy.
Stating that the BJP president had been inconsiderate while speaking on uranium mining in the State, KSU SWKHD president F. Nongrem said, “A mining policy is mandatory as uranium cannot be compared with other heavy metals.”
“However, no mining policy can prevent radiation from harming the people and the environment and the BJP chief should have turned towards the USA natives, Navajo and the aborigines of Australia and Japan after the Fukushima disaster to know the consequences of uranium mining,” he added.
Nongrem alleged that Lyngdoh was concerned only for a particular section of the people and questioned his motive on whether he had any responsibility towards the State.
“The intention to mine uranium will only result in ‘genocide’ and we urge the people to  be vigilant. Lyngdoh’s views that it would be proper to go ahead with uranium mining is misleading,” he added.
At the same time, the organization has appealed the State government to halt pre-uranium mining activity of UCIL.
The organization has asked the State government and the Home department to do away with the temporary police camp from Rangblang till Mawthabah stating that the locals there do not need police protection.
