SHILLONG: The lady imposter Evangeline Kharbuli (39), who posed as a police officer and duped over 450 youths promising jobs, was granted anticipatory bail in connection with the second FIR lodged against her at Laitumkhrah Police station.
Earlier, after her arrest on July 14 following the first FIR, she was granted bail on medical grounds. She collected over Rs 2 crore from unsuspecting victims by promising them jobs.
The lady was present at the lower court premises during the hearing. She refused to speak to media persons and rushed in a local taxi accompanied by lawyers.
Earlier on Sunday, a woman had filed the third FIR against Kharbuli for duping her and two others.
The woman in her complaint said that in September last year, she and two other women collectively paid Rs.2,50,000 to Kharbuli, for a job in the Home Guards after she claimed to be a Sub-Inspector of Home Guards, Meghalaya.
However, later, they realized that the person is an imposter and had cheated them.
When contacted, Director General, Civil Defense and Home Guards, Raghvendra Awasthi said that there are no posts of Sub-Inspector in the Home Guards department as claimed by the imposter.
The official also said that the department will write to the SP East Khasi Hills and the DGP to investigate into the matter to find out if the woman has nexus with someone from the department. Meanwhile, Marko Mitri, Headman of Mawlai Kynton Massar, the locality where Kharbuli stayed said, “We vehemently condemn her actions as it has tarnished the image of the locality. She is only a tenant and we urge the owners to carefully choose tenants from now onwards and to not rent out homes to fraudsters.” According to the headman, the lady and her husband had absconded from Kynton Massar since the day she was arrested and she had not returned to her house at Kynton Massar. “We do not know her whereabouts now,” he added.
