SHILLONG: While defending the transfer of the outgoing Ri-Bhoi district Deputy Commissioner M Kharmujai, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said the Government is not here to serve the interest of the officers.

“The Government cannot allow any officer to continue in the same post only to serve his interest,” Dr Sangma said while speaking to reporters on Friday.

He also maintained that the Government can utilise the service of any officer wherever it deemed necessary.

“We want to appoint officers who can handle exigencies in a given situation at their place of posting the,” Chief Minister said.

However, despite the justification sources say that Kharmujai is a victim of political vendetta. He had been in the eye of the storm ever since he recommended that the Government should construct the four-lane highway through the Umsning Bypass to prevent any law and order problem.

Not only this, the outgoing Deputy Commissioner was also blamed for the errors made by PWD Minister HDR Lyngdoh.

While talking to media persons, the PWD Minister had said that according to the Deputy Commissioner the NGOs had called off their agitation.

Actually, Kharmujai had informed Lyngdoh that the talks with the NGOs was positive and they are ‘likely’ to call off the agitation.

But when the NGOs went ahead with their agitational programme, the PWD Minister felt that Kharmujai had misled him.
