SHILLONG: The NPP has urged legislators to put pressure on the authorities concerned to release the magisterial inquiry report into the killing of two civilians at Rajasimla under Kharkutta, North Garo Hills by army personnel and to ensure that the family members of the deceased get justice.
It was on November 25 last year that a school teacher, Alphius M Momin (35) and Sweetbirth D Marak (30), a vendor who sold challans at Dainadubi check gate, were shot dead by the army personnel in a case of mistaken identity at Rajasimla when they were travelling on a motorcycle at night.
The Army had admitted the mistake and ordered an inquiry, the findings of which, however, have been pending for almost one year. Besides the army probe, the North Garo Hills district administration had ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, but the report is yet to be made public.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, Rupert Momin, leader of the NPP’s Kharkutta unit said that people have forgotten the incident.
“The pressure groups and the public may forget the incident, but the parents who are yet to get justice will never forget the awful episode,” Momin said
He also wanted to know why the pressure groups and elected public leaders including the local MLA and MDCs from Kharkutta were silent on the issue.
According to the NPP leader, it is the duty of the public representatives to ask for adequate compensation and punishment to the guilty.
