SHILLONG: A new association of postal employees has been floated to look into the welfare of the staff.
The National Association of Postal Employee Union (NAPE), affiliated to the Federation of National Postal Organization (FNPO), has been formed with Desmond N. Nongkhlaw as its president and Simon Peter Dohling as Divisional Secretary with 12 other office bearers and 50 members.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Dohling said, “The association has been formed with certain objectives, especially to enable recruitment of local people in vacant posts in post offices in the State.”
Dohling said there should be implementation of local languages as eligibility for recruitment in Department of Posts in Meghalaya Division and the entire North Eastern Circle.
“All the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) posts in Meghalaya Division should be filled immediately to open employment avenues for the local people. A separate postal Division for Garo Hills and creation of the post of Superintendent of Post Offices, Garo Hills Division, are needed for better administration and welfare of the staff,” he said.
Conversion of single-handed post offices to double-handed ones in the Meghalaya Division and the North Eastern circle and demand for continuing of Hills Compensatory Allowance for the North East Circle were also on his agenda.
