Contempt of Court case

SHILLONG: Former KHADC Chief Executive Member Adelbert Nongrum, who was dragged to the court for making defamatory comments against the order of the High Court of Meghalaya last year, has now sought to defend himself in the case without any legal assistance.
In the hearing on Wednesday, GS Massar and HS Thangkhiew, senior advocates, and advocate P. Nongbri submitted before the court that the principal contemnor, Adelbert Nongrum, seeks to deal with the case himself and hence, they sought permission from the Court to withdraw.
During the hearing, Nongrum also specifically submitted that the counsels would not be representing him anymore and accordingly, they were permitted to withdraw from the case.
The other five leaders of the HYC against whom notices had been issued and who had filed affidavits in response were also present in the court with their respective counsel.
Senior counsel, VK Jindal, appearing for CBI in this matter, submitted that he received the corrected copies of the affidavits of these five persons on Wednesday itself and would require few days’ time to respond to the same. If necessary, he shall file an affidavit in response, he added.
ND Chullai, Senior Government Advocate, submitted that though he has received a copy each of the affidavits filed by the five persons he was yet to receive the copies of the affidavits filed by the principal contemnor, Adelbert Nongrum.
The Registry was directed to supply a copy of the necessary affidavit to the senior government advocate within two days and the matter has been listed on September 15.
