‘State not ready to tackle quakes’

SHILLONG: Meghalaya as well as other parts of India are not prepared for earthquakes as compared to the developed countries, a professor of Environmental Studies at NEHU has said.
Prof D. Walia, head of the department of Environmental Studies at the university, said during a seminar on seismic activity on Friday that he had been to different states in India and abroad and after a comparative study, he found out that “India, particularly Meghalaya, is not prepared for earthquakes”.
Speaking at the state-level seminar organised by the departments of Chemistry and Environmental Studies at Shillong College, Dinecessity to have regulations — “not regulations of expression of authority of the government but regulations with one fact in mind that will ensure safe and secure houses for the residents of the State”.
The northeastern part of the country lies in Zone 5 i.e it is the most vulnerable to temblors.
The seminar was organized with the objective to provide a platform for experts in the subject as well as authorities concerned to exchange ideas. Those who spoke on mitigation measures include S. Bordoloi, Consultant State Disaster Management Authority, Meghalaya, and K. Wanniang, Assistant District Planning Officer, District Disaster Management Authority, Meghalaya.
