SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has clarified that no ‘Times Square’ will come up at Polo as part of the expansion of the area.
During the question hour on the matter on Friday, after Urban and Municipal Affairs Minister Ronnie Lyngdoh replied in the Assembly that the DPR was yet to be prepared, the Chief Minister intervened and said he had never stated that a Times Square-like structure would come up at Polo.
“I have never said it will be called Times Square. I had given only a reference that it will be like Times Square. Even my daughter asked me how can it be Times Square,” the Chief Minister said in his reply to a supplementary question by Jemino Mawthoh.
According to the Chief Minister, a number of presentations were made on the Polo project.
Earlier replying to questions, Lyngdoh said the Government plans to set up flyovers, shopping mall, parks for children and senior citizens in the Polo area and a pedestrian bridge across the river. Lyngdoh said a committee has been formed to look into the acquisition of land from land owners and for the implementation of the project there is a need to shift all vendors from the area.
