JOWAI: A woman from Jalaphet village, East Jaintia Hills District has alleged that a goldsmith from Panaliar Jowai cheated her of 21tolas and 7 anna of gold.
Narrating the incident, Snawbha Bareh said that she approached Hamboi Lakiang, who owns a shop at Merusa Complex near Woodland Clinic for repair of her gold ornaments on February 2015 to which she was issued a receipt. Few days later when she went to collect her ornaments, Lakiang apologized and told her that he had ‘misplaced’ half of her gold and gave her back the other half. According to her, the unreturned gold is worth Rs. 3,70,000.
On August 31, 2015, she lodged a complaint at Jowai PS against him and an agreement was made on September 2, 2015 that he will pay the entire amount within 15 days.
On expiry of the agreement, he asked for an extension of another 5 months but failed to return the gold or the money.
“I was cheated by the goldsmith and I want the law to take strict action against him”, said Bareh.
