SHILLONG: The state election committee of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has named HS Shylla as the UDP candidate from Nongkrem constituency for the MDC by-election in December.
The party will decide on the process of selecting candidates for other constituencies   by October. UDP held a meeting on Monday to discuss names of candidates in other constituencies.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, UDP working president Jemino Mawthoh said, “As for the constituencies – which include Mairang, Rambrai, Mawthadraishan, Laban, War East, Sohiong, Jaintia Hills – we have directed the grassroots level workers from the circles and district levels to speed up the process of selecting candidates. We have given them time till October.”
“In selecting a candidate to contest for the by-election, it solely depends on the wisdom of the district and circle party workers,” he added.
Commenting on the issue of one man one post, Mawthoh said, “We agree in principle but we have to examine the practicability of the democratic process and we have to solicit the views and opinions from the grassroots workers.”
The party intends to field candidates in all the constituencies.
When asked about the contentious dual-posts bill issue, UDP leader Bindo Lanong said the law was inconclusive. “It is still inconclusive as the High Court has upheld the order. We will wait till the final orders are out,” he said.
