SHILLONG: Meghalaya Governor V. Shanmuganathan is yet to notify officially the date for holding the by-election to seven district council constituencies.
An official source said on Monday that after the Supreme Court stayed the order of the High Court of Meghalaya, which had disapproved the December 13 date fixed by the State government, the Governor was informed by the government regarding the decision to hold the polls on the same date.
Six seats in KHADC and one in JHADC fell vacant following the resignation of MLAs who were MDCs too following the amended dual post Act.
The State Cabinet had fixed the by-poll date for December 13 and the counting for December 16. The process of election will begin from the publication of draft electoral rolls on October 10.
The source added that the letter of the legal counsel for the State in the Apex Court, Ranjan Mukherjee, was also sent to the Governor on the status of the case after the Supreme Court allowed the State government to go ahead with the polls.
The source added that the Governor is taking time since he is yet to receive the copy of the Supreme Court order.
