NONGSTOIN: The women’s wing of KSU in West Khasi Hills urged the government on Wednesday to take measures to curb crime against women and children in the district and demanded that the fast track court be re-introduced.
In a press conference held here on Wednesday, KSU women’s wing general secretary Daia Nongbri said Meghalaya had seen a rise in violence against women and children in the past few months and this needed to be addressed.
Nongbri further said the absence of a fast track court in the State, low conviction rate and frequent bails to the accused have propelled the crime trend. Locals too agreed that the fast track court would solve the problem to a great extent.
Nongbri condemned the gang rape of a 15-year-old at Myriaw on September 11 by eight people
The fast track court was discontinued in the State because the Centre stopped funding.
