Judges remind citizens about constitutional duties

SHILLONG: In today’s world of violence, adopting and implementing basic fundamental duties by citizens will act as an effective deterrent to crime, said Justice S.R Sen at a function on Saturday.
Addressing the inaugural function of the Legal Care and Support Centre at Lady Keane College on Saturday, Justice Sen said proper implementation of various provisions of the Constitution could curb many crime cases.
The Constitution says there should be no discrimination among people and that it is the duty of every citizen to respect its ideals and institutions, the Tricolour and the National Anthem. “We cannot ask for our rights if we don’t do our fundamental duties well,” said Justice Sen.
Justice Sen further said the State Legal Service Authority conducts awareness programmes in rural areas and it would continue to do so for the benefit of people. especially the downtrodden.
Chief Justice Dinesh Maheswari in his speech said, “We have duties to our personal self, family, state and towards the nation. We have fundamental duties and this starts from an individual.”
Earlier, Justice Ved Prakash said the objective of the support centre is to familiarise weaker section of the society with their rights and provide them all assistance in legal matters.
