Initiative may save up to 26 mw of power

SHILLONG: The Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme aimed at saving precious energy was launched here on Tuesday by Power Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
According to Dhar, the scheme could not have come at a better time considering the fact that the MeECL is being forced to resort to load shedding due to less rainfall. He also hoped that people would come out in large numbers to avail the benefit of the scheme.
Under the scheme 2-10 LED bulbs, each priced at Rs 90, will be given to every household. The beneficiaries would have to produce their electricity bills before purchasing the bulbs.
It may be mentioned that the scheme is being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the Ministry of Power and aims to promote efficient lighting, enhance awareness on using efficient equipment which reduce electricity bills and help preserve environment.
Meghalaya in charge of EESL Anuj Sharma said that the scheme aims to cover 3.5 lakh households in the State. Stating that EESL would soon open outlets in the state, he said that Meghalaya can save 26 mw of power once the scheme is fully implemented.
He also stressed the need to create awareness about the scheme in rural areas of the State to realize its benefit to the fullest.
It may be mentioned that the National LED programme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2015.
