SHILLONG: A group of 30 schoolchildren from Bangladesh arrived in Dawki on Sunday as part of a goodwill programme aimed at developing a cordial relation between the border security forces of the two countries.
The students visited Mawlynnong, the cleanest village, and the root bridge on Sunday before arriving at the Border Security Force’s Umpling unit.
A BSF statement said on Sunday during their four-day stay in Meghalaya till Wednesday, they will visit popular tourist sites around Shillong and interact with the students of a few schools.
The main motive behind their visit is to get acquainted with “the socio-culture, education and social harmony existing in India”.
“This visit will definitely enable the students from Bangladesh to know about Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage,” the BSF said, adding that this would also act as a confidence building measure between the people of the two countries.
As part of the programme, students from the BSF school here will also visit Bangladesh by the end of this month.
According to BSF, the students’ visit “has opened a new chapter in friendship and trust between Meghalaya and Bangladesh”.
