SHILLONG: The Block Development Office of Selsella in its meeting held on Tuesday decided not to issue job cards to protestors who had burnt down their cards during a recent agitation.
It may be mentioned that some rural job card holders of Horipur VEC under Selsella constituency had burnt their cards in protest against the alleged anomalies in the functioning of the VEC. The job card holders were demanding dissolution of the VEC and immediate election to it. West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi on Wednesday informed that the election   to the VEC was stayed as per the order of the High Court.
Bakshi said that the Selsella BDO had informed the protestors about the High Court order but they did not pay any heed to it. He added that the district administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
Earlier, the High Court while disposing of the matter had stated that as per MGNREGA guidelines, fresh elections to VECs should be held every three years.
Meanwhile, Golam Hasan, secretary of Horipur VEC has denied allegations that he withdrew the previous balance fund Rs 3.6 lakh from the VEC account without consulting job card holders.
