SHILLONG: The Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme, which was launched in the city last month, is receiving good response.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Rounak Bandopadhyay, the Regional Manager of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) that is implementing the project, said the firm has not been able to open many retail outlets in Shillong due to IT issues but this will be resolved after Durga puja.
“The three to four outlets in the city are distributing more than 1,000 bulbs,” Bandopadhyay said.
Stating that Meghalaya has 2.8 lakh consumers, he said that the firm has planned to sell around 28 lakh bulbs in the State with the ceiling of 10 bulbs for each consumer. “The company will open 100-150 retail outlets in Meghalaya, including 20-50 in Shillong,” he said.
EESL is a joint venture of PSUs under the Ministry of Power  and aims to promote efficient lighting, enhance awareness on using efficient equipment that will reduce electricity bills and help preserve the environment.
Bandopadhyay said Meghalaya can save 26 MW of power once the scheme is fully implemented.  The national LED programme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2015.
