Miscreants forcing GH villagers to share compensation

SHILLONG: Miscreants in Rongjeng in East Garo Hills are allegedly forcing people to sign a “power of attorney” promising them 30 per cent of the money the residents receive as compensation for a road project.
According to locals, the miscreants have unleashed a reign of terror in the entire area by demanding money from a section of the residents who would be compensated for parting with their land for an upcoming road project on the new National Highway 62.
“I have signed the papers after they mounted pressure on me,” said a villager who was forced to sign some documents. Most of the villagers have already signed the ‘power of attorney’ but none have spoken to police out of fear. Attempts were made to contact the East Garo Hills SP and DC but they could not be reached.
