SHILLONG: Acting on a tip off, a team of Anti-Smuggling Unit from Customs Division, Imphal, headed by its Superintendent Giansing Panmei, busted a major gold smuggling racket on Monday at around 6:30 am near North AOC, Imphal. 50 gold biscuits believed to be of Myanmar foreign origin weighing 8.3 kgs were detected and seized from the possession of two accused, hailing from Bihar and UP, as they were about to leave for Dimapur on a Tata Winger.
The accused were arrested and sent to judicial custody. Further investigation of the case is on. The value of the seized gold biscuits is estimated at Rs. 2.46 crore approximately.
In a separate incident, the Customs Unit of LGBIA (Guwahati Airport) headed by J.N.D. Mahanta, Superintendent detected 116 packages of foreign origin readymade garments, shoes and remote controlled CCTV cameras believed to have been smuggled from Myanmar in a New Delhi bound domestic flight at Guwahati Airport on Sunday.
