Editor,

Apropos to your news item “Mukul defends DC transfer,” it was reported that the Chief Minister said the government cannot allow any officer to remain in the same post only to serve the officer’s interest. This relates to the recent transfer of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District. The public are well aware that the present Deputy Commissioner of Jaintia Hills district, T Dkhar is allowed to remain in the same post in the district even after an order was issued by the Government for his transfer. In his desire to remain in the same post, T Dkhar used the influence of the powerful coal and cement lobby to convince the Government to cancel the transfer order overnight in spite of the strong demand of the general public of Jaintia Hills to get him out from the district. This clearly shows that officers with support from powerful lobbies for mutual interest are favoured in spite of the mess they creat which adversely affects public interest, whereas others with no such clout are made scapegoats. Will the Chief Minister who often eloquently expresses his desire for sincerity and good governance explain himself as this appears to be hypocrisy of the highest order.

Yours etc.,

 Selective human rights

 Editor,

Every now and again we read about the Meghalaya Peoples’ Human Rights Council (MPHRC) fighting for the cause of the common man whenever any human rights violations take place(more so if the violators happens to be men in uniform). But it is disturbing and heartbreaking to note that when these “men in uniform” sacrifice their lives fighting anti-social elements for the good of the society and the country as a whole, no one gives a damn as if policemen who are serving us day in and day out are not human beings. I appeal to all the right thinking citizens of our state to condemn and raise their voices against the violations of all human rights including those of men in uniform who died fighting the in Garo Hills recently.

At this sad moment, I pray for the departed brave cops (Late) H/C W Maiong & 3 others who were killed at Thapa Darenchi) who died to keep us secure. of us.

Yours etc.,

Saleng Marak,
