JNV Mawphlang bags prize
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) East Khasi Hills under the department of Agriculture, celebrated the World Food Day 2016 on October 18 under the theme “Climate is changing, food and agriculture must too” at IATC 6th Mile. On this occasion, an inter school quiz competition was organized for the schools in and around Upper Shillong area.  At the end of the competition, the first prize was bagged by JNV Mawphlang, second prize by Rev.T.J.Jones Presbyterian School, Mawphlang and the third prize was awarded to Springtime Secondary School, Sadew.

Cleaning drive at EFL Univ
The English and Foreign Languages (EFL) University, Shillong Campus organized a cleaning drive in its campus here on Thursday to observe Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The Shillong Campus Director In-Charge, Prof. T.K.Bamon, kicked off the 4-hour cleaning drive which began with taking of the Swachh Bharat pledge by teachers, non-teaching staff and students for a clean country.

Mock drill held in Nongstoin
A three-day sensitization programme on disaster management, search & rescue, first aid, preparation of village disaster management plans  was organized by the District Disaster Management Authority, (DDMA), Nongstoin in collaboration with the NRICH Solution Society, Nongstoin   from October 18 -20 at Nongstoin C & RD Block. The objective of the training was to acquaint the locals on the various aspects of disaster management.

Road repair
The Shilliang Wah Shella Local Taxi Drivers’ and Owners’ Association along with the KSU, Mawlong and Mawkynring units repaired the road stretching from Mawdiangdiang to Mawlong. They expressed gratitude to Mawryngkneng MLA David Nongrum, Laitumkhrah MDC Antonio War and Sohryngkham MDC PS Syiem for contributing to the repair work.

School celebrates silver jubilee
The Silver Jubilee ceremony of Mawiong Lumsyntiew Secondary School in Nongstoin concluded on Thursday. LG Nongsiej, local MDC in KHADC who was the chief guest on the occasion, lauded the endeavour of the school’s founders to encourage education in the village. Nongsiej also sanctioned Rs 3 lakh as donation to the school managing committee.

Health workshop for scribes
The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) held a workshop for journalists here on Thursday.  Stating that the 4th Estate can play a big role in evaluating the health scenario in the state, Director of IIPHS, Sandra Albert spoke to media persons about various health issues that go unreported and the need to push for improvement in the health sector.

Foreign cigarettes flooding market
A local marketing agency in Jowai has alleged that large contraband of tobacco and cigarette were being smuggled in Jaintia Hills from Bangldesh and Myanmar. It is unclear as to who is responsible for the distribution of these foreign items which are openly sold at almost all shops in Jowai, the complaint stated. The Pariat Marketing Agency, who had lodged a complaint with the SP, West Jaintia Hills requested him to take stern action against those involved in the illegal trade. ‘These smuggled cigarette and tobacco does not follow the warning image as directed by the Supreme Court of India,’ said the agency.

Theft
One T  Lyngdoh, SDE (CFA/CM), BSNL, Jowai, on Wednesday, lodged a complaint stating that unknown miscreants stole telephone cables from New Hill, Jowai. SE Kharbhih of Mawsynram  lodged a complaint stating that on October 19 around 7.30pm, one Aleric Kurbah,23, stole cash worth Rs. 1 lakh from the residence of Deolian Kharbhih, 80.

Drugs seized
On October 18, at about 9.30pm, Kitlang Lato, General Secretary , Dulong Locality, Jowai informed police that residents of the locality apprehended one Chamly Laloo, 30, and recovered around 790 grams of suspected cannabis and a large quantity of IMFL from his possession. Police arrested the accused.
