Warjri concerned over rising infant, maternal mortality rates

SHILLONG: Health Minister Roshan Warjri on Monday expressed concern over the alarming trend of infant and maternal mortality rates in the State.
Addressing a review meeting on the National Health Mission held here, Warjri said that there is a need to have the right mechanism and strategy in place to effectively address the issue of infant and maternal mortality rates. “In order to serve people better, it is imperative upon us all to work as a team,” she added.
Warjri urged the participants to freely put forward their experiences and suggestions during the discussions so that issues pertaining to the overall health scenario can be improved. She informed that in future such review meetings will be held in all districts so that the problems can be dealt with effectively from the grassroots level. (Contd on P-10)

(Contd from P-3) Additional chief secretary Y. Tsering, while highlighting the various issues that hamper the smooth delivery of health services to people, said that the main concern and problem lies in the scarcity of manpower and the human resources constraint.
He also stressed on the need for maximum use of the available resources.
H. M. Shangpliang, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare cum Mission Director, NHM informed that the objective of the meeting was to discuss the key issues with regards to the functioning and the problems and also to review the various programmes of the NHM, while Dr. R. O. Budnah, Director of Health Services (MCH & FW) cum Joint Mission Director, NHM gave a power point presentation on maternal and child health and also on various health issues.
