NONGPOH: Residents of Umsawnongkharai in Ri Bhoi have blamed the KHADC for creating unrest in the village by appointing one Joseph Lyngdoh Thaiang as acting headman of the hamlet.
The villagers argued that there was no need for the council to appoint Thaiang as the residents had already elected A. Sun as their headman.
The villagers asserted that they will not recognize Thaiang as their headman since he did not enjoy the support of majority of the people in the area. “The KHADC has appointed him as the acting headman without verifying the facts,” the villagers said.
Meanwhile, the acting headman was forced to conduct a meeting outside the village durbar hall as the angry villagers did not allow him and his supporters to enter the room. Thaiang’s supporters had to abandon the meeting midway as villagers shouted slogans against them.
The villagers also informed media persons that had recently met KHADC CEM PN Syiem demanding Thaiang’s ouster.
The villagers urged the KHADC chief to visit the village to find out who enjoyed the support of majority of the residents.
The villagers also threatened to march to the council office if it failed to remove Thaiang from the post within a week.
