GSU urges Minister to end power cuts during exams

SHILLONG: The Garo Students’ Union has urged Power Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar to discontinue load shedding in November and December in view of the annual examinations in schools. In a memorandum submitted to the Minister on Saturday, the NGO said annual examinations in schools that start in November continue till the second week of December and frequent power cuts would inconvenience students. The NGO said people in the remote areas of Garo Hills “are living in the dark age” as there are no electricity for days. “The Government, as a goodwill gesture, ensured that there was no load shedding in the entire state during the recent Puja celebrations and it is everybody’s expectation that there will be no load shedding during school examinations, which is more important than celebrations,” it said. GSU wants the government to explore ways to generate hydro or alternative power in Garo Hills.
