Guwahati: Under pressure to crack the growing number of cases of attacks on Guwahati-based businessmen in recent months, the Assam Police on Wednesday arrested two persons involved in one such incident, in which a jewellery trader was shot dead.

One Chandan Kalita was arrested from Guwahati last night and based on his confession, one Safikul Islam was apprehended from Dhubri in the wee hours today, IGP (central-western range) GP Singh said.

The duo has been arrested in connection with the attack on jewellery trader Sanjay Basak and his brother in the city on October 10.

Sanjay was shot dead, while his brother was injured by the miscreants, who fled the scene, after grabbing a bag full of jewellery and cash from the brothers.

Mr Singh said Chandan had links with the proscribed ULFA earlier, though his current association with the outfit is not clear.

He was arrested twice earlier while working for the ULFA and arms were also seized from him. He has not surrendered from the outfit nor is part of the ceasefire group. His current status with the outfit is not clear yet, Mr Singh added.

He said two more arrests would be made shortly based on the confessions of Chandan and Safikul.

One of the two pistols used in the attack has been seized, along with a few gold chains.

On possible involvement of militant outfit behind such attacks, Mr Singh said Chandan’s involvement raised doubts of such a probability. (UNI)
