SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee of All Meghalaya Farmer Union (JACAMFU) has threatened to march towards the Secretariat if the government fails to focus on farmers’ issues.
JACAMFU chairman Commander Shangpliang said, “Enacting a law for the farmers will benefit them as in time of natural calamity, they will get relief offers. There will be markets for selling their produce and storage facilities, among others,” he said.
Shangpliang said that non-existence of legislation will be a burden for farmers who are already struggling to make ends meet and demanded that the government should allot more funds to this primary sector.
“The government is swift to enact a law to enhance the salaries of the MLAs. Ministers do not want to look after the Agriculture Department as it does not benefit them financially,” Shangpliang added.
On the other hand, the leaders of the organisation visited some of the agricultural areas destroyed by hailstones at Pingwait, Dienglieng and other areas situated at the Mawkynrew Block.
Shangpliang has urged the state government to compensate for the loss of agricultural produce.
