SHILLONG: Many shopkeepers in the city continued to reject Rs 10 coin despite the central bank assuring that there was no fake coin in the market and the chief minister taking a tough stand against traders harassing consumers.
While most of the shops in the city refused to accept the coin saying they accept only original coins and not fake ones, a group of smarter traders rejected saying they already had a bagful of the coins.
The Reserve Bank of India and SBI on Tuesday dismissed the rumour of counterfeit coins in the market.
“What to do, If I accept this from you, I have to give it to someone but they are not accepting it,” a shopkeeper said in defense.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar said the banks should intervene in the matter and give a detailed clarification on the rumour. He, however, said harassed people can lodge a complaint with the DC office or police.
