SHILLONG: A Border Wing Home Guard havaldar reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself at the official residence of Dalu MLA Kenethson R. Sangma in Bishnupur on Tuesday night.
The victim has been identified as Kharki Chettri from Nongtalang in Jaintia Hills.
R. Awasthi, Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards, said an internal inquiry has been started and police are also conducting its own inquiry into the matter.
Awasthi also said based on the information received, Chettri was under some psychological pressure after his child became blind.
The official, however, denied speculations that demonetisation pressure forced him to take the drastic step.
On the other hand, East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang said the incident is under inquiry.
