SHILLONG: Tura MP Conrad Sangma has called the Centre’s decision to demonetise a “positive move” but admitted that people across the country are facing difficulties because of it.
Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, Sangma said there was a standoff in Parliament over the issue as the Opposition wanted immediate discussions whereas the Speaker said the discussion would take place after the question hour.
The NPP president said since demonetisation is a “large-scale operation”, people are bound to face problems in the short run but the “problematic phase is going beyond expectations”. He urged people to support the move for a greater good in the long run.
Sangma said the Centre is ready for discussion on the issue under Rule 913. “The move will address the issue of black money and the funding of terror groups. Besides, it will generate a lot of revenue and taxes,” he added.
Meanwhile, NPP state president W.R Kharlukhi said the mainland can learn from smaller states like Meghalaya where parliamentary proceedings are never disrupted though MLAs often debate and quarrel on important issues. “There is no such disruption here in Meghalaya and though we are a smaller state, the mainland can learn many things from here,” he told reporters.
