Owner claims it as tax money
SHILLONG: After the demonetization move of the Centre on November 8, the Income Tax office here has detected only one case of cash transaction of suspicious nature, which, however, turned out to be accounted money as claimed by the owner.
The case in point is the cash belonging to the city-based businessman Manoj Kumar Lunia.
According to Income Tax sources, over Rs 20 lakh was detected recently at Guwahati airport which was found in the possession of an employee (manager) of the businessman.
After quizzing the manager, the Income Tax sleuths came to know that Lunia had followed the Centre’s Income Declaration Scheme for his deposit of Rs 7.22 crore and over Rs 20 lakh brought from Kolkata was meant to be its tax to be deposited in Shillong.
“We followed up the case and the cash was released to the owner. Since the taxable money will ultimately come to us, we hope that the owner will follow the norms”, the official added.
Meanwhile, the Income Tax officials are keeping a close watch on the cash transactions of businessmen and other big-wigs.
The move is to prevent giving away some ‘commission’ to the indigenous persons for depositing in their bank accounts the unaccounted money of non indigenous businessmen.
“We have not detected any such case, but we are keeping vigil”, an official said.
The indigenous accountant holders of various bank branches have been asked to be alert and be cautious in this regard.
Another area the Income Tax officials is looking at is the transaction of Rs 500 and 1000 notes among the traders and by business establishments since they are no longer treated as legal tenders.
