SHILLONG: NCP MLA Sanbor Shullai has taken exception to the statement made by HSPDP candidate Banri Kupar Wahlang from Laban-Mawprem which was reported in a section of the vernacular media who reportedly said that Shullai has “destroyed the Khasis at Laban by securing rampant trading license to non-tribals”.
“I don’t know how to define the word destroy in this context as the word itself sounds raw and arrogant. Had I destroyed the people I would have ended up behind bars. Or does it mean that I am trying to divide the people of the constituency.  It is up to the people to give the verdict,” he said.
Asserting that Wahlang’s statement revealed his childish behaviour, he said, “As a candidate, he should display some maturity. Even on the first day of filing nominations, he has started electioneering by using unwarranted words.”
On Wahlamg’s claim that Shullai has issued trading licenses to non-tribals who have not stayed in the state for long, he said, “He offered himself as a candidate but don’t know the law, as the KHADC has its sets of laws.”
“It is absurd that the HSPDP fielded a candidate that does not know the law. I am not a licensing officer as I am only an MLA.  All these years he has been in HSPDP, why not move motions at the floor of the KHADC regarding the issue,” he added.
Shullai said that after the recommendation of the traditional institutions to verify that the applicants are genuine, the executive committee scrutinizes the applications and then decide on issuing the trading licenses.
