SHILLONG: The Khasi Jaintia Butchers’ Association (KJBWA) has decided to stop purchasing cattle from Khanapara market in Ri-Bhoi from Friday.
“As long as the KHADC and Hima Mylliem don’t allow the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry to inspect and ear tag the cattle we will not make any purchase from Khanapara market,” KJBWA vice president Generous Warlarpih said after a meeting with Director of Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary B. Rijai.
The KJBWA and leaders of FKJGP have expressed gratitude to the department for initiating the process of cattle checkup before its arrival to the state and ear tagging of the cattle at Khanapara to prevent their smuggling to Bangladesh.
Warlarpih said that the initiative of the department, which is a welcome move, was halted after the Syiem of Hima Mylliem disallowed the same.
Informing that ear tagging costs Rs 15 and checkup Rs 10 per cow, he claimed that nobody complained about the cost until the KHADC and Hima Mylliem intervened.
“We suspect that there is an ulterior motive behind the move,” he added.
