Centre assesses impact of demonetisation in Assam

GUWAHATI: The Central government official who is in the panel to deal with demonetization fall out, has come to Assam to take stock of the situation in the state in the aftermath of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 currency notes being put out of circulation.
Abhijit Chandra, a member of the Central Government’s panel has been camping in the city since Monday to assess the impact of cash crunch in the state after demonetisation. He will submit a report to the Prime Minister after the end of his three-day visit to the state.
Chandra informed that he had been meeting bank officials, officials of various state government departments, traders, transporters in the state since yesterday besides visiting different ATMs in the city on Monday evening.
He is scheduled to visit parts of rural Assam on Wednesday to assess the situation in those parts.
Chandra said, “I shall be submitting a report to the prime minister on November 25.”
He informed that new Rs 500 notes and larger numbers of smaller denomination notes are likely to arrive in the state within a couple of days even as people and common traders are facing severe hardship in carrying out small transaction with new Rs 2000 notes in absence of smaller denomination currency notes.
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday apprise the Prime Minister of steps taken by the state government in coordination with Reserve Bank of India to facilitate supply of new currency notes in the State.
He also informed the PM that the State with the help of RBI, SBI and other banks had taken adequate steps to ensure smooth flow of new currency notes to all sections of people including tea garden workers.
